Ever wonder why some of your emails get read and others don’t. AWeber, one of the internet’s premier e-mail marketing firms, recently explained why.
- Don’t use ALL CAPS. This triggers spam filters and can cause your emails to get filtered to the spam folder.
- Keep it under 71 characters. However, the most-opened subject lines are between 50 and 65 characters.
- Review your subject line on a mobile phone before sending. Mobile phones can cut off a subject line at the wrong place or remove the part of your subject line that’s really going to get people to open! Send yourself a test of your email and review it on a mobile phone.
- Don’t mislead your subscribers. Using wild or irrelevant subject lines to get more subscribers to open your email is a bad tactic. This can lead them to unsubscribe from your list or mark your email as spam.
- Ask a question. Research has found that subject lines that include a frequently asked question can score open rates 26 percent above average.
- Mention pain points. If your subject line talks about challenges within your industry and solutions, your subscribers may be more likely to open it.
- Talk about the benefits. Write about the benefit subscribers will get from the content within your email.
- Incite curiosity. Hint at the content of your email in your subject line. For example, your subject line could be something like, “The answer to [______] is inside this email.” Fill in the blank with a common question your audience asks.
- Include their first name. Significant increases in open rates have occurred just by including a subscriber’s first name in the subject line.
I hope you found these suggestions helpful. AWeber is a great resource. If you’re not familiar with them, you should check them out (I do not receive any referral fees).
As always, have a great week
