When I was a young “on the rise” executive (more than 25 years ago), a guy named Phil Kaplan was brought in to be the new COO of the retail organization I worked for. We were preparing for a huge expansion of the business. Since Phil was legendary in the retail world, and the board felt he would be the perfect person to help us execute our growth strategy.
After working together for about 6 months, Phil sat me down one day and said “Henry, I am going to show you the single greatest “tool” ever created for successful business growth”…
I got to know Phil quite well. He had a bigger than life persona, and was prone to making outrageous statements…
So I immediately laughed and thought to myself “there’s no such GREATEST TOOL”.
10 minutes later….I was mesmerized and eating up every last word.
Phil had previously been the CEO for a number of $100++ million retailers. His ability to generate high profits for his companies was legendary, and I have heard from others who worked for him that he was exceptional at “making things happen”.
Don’t misunderstand me. When he made outrageous statements, on some level I listened intently. But I’ve never bought into the idea that there’s a single Greatest “tool” to create successful business growth.
I’ve always subscribed to the school that there are numerous “very important” things you need to do:
Have a sound business strategy…
Know what your customer wants and then over-deliver…
Have a sound financial plan…
Put in the work…
Constantly test new marketing ideas…
Execute effectively…and a host of other things.
So the idea that a successful COO, regardless of his experience and success, could have uncovered the single GREATEST “tool” to ensure successful business growth just really didn’t seem plausible to me.
THEN…within a matter of minutes Phil turned my understanding of what was possible right on its head.
He explained it had nothing to do with capital…nothing to do with technology…and it wasn’t marketing…
The game changing business tool was something he called THE CONTROL SEQUENCE.

It’s hard to believe. I get it.
